i cant run on a treadmill, so is speed walking okay or just as good?

i do not like running, i've tried and i can do it for about 10 min but i just get sick of it.i would rather speedwalk for 30 and not be huffing and puffing and about to throw up. so will speedwalking still give me the benefits of running on a tredmill?

With all due respect to those who think walking is "just as good" as running, I must disagree.

When walking, be it power walking or race walking, you always have at least one foot on the ground. When running, you must use more different muscles in order to propel yourself off the ground.Therefore, more muscles are used and therefore more muscles gain some benefit.

If you are fairly new to the sport, consider trying something called "fartlek" as a way of breaking up your run. While this is a training technique that I generally suggest for more advanced runners (who may be training for a marathon), it is a nice way to have some fun while running.

So, how do you do it? Well, if you're out on the road, you would do it by varying the speed at which you are running. Once you reach,say, 1/4 mile, you might consider slowing to a brisk walk for a minute or so, just to catch some air. Pick out some point up ahead such as a telephone pole or a fire hydrant, and decide that you will start to run once you reach that spot. Repeat that sequence 2 or 3 times. From there, you might try some hills, but nothing too steep at first. When you start up the hill, run hard. Take it as far as you can, then turn around and walk back down! When you reach the bottom, or the start of that street, go back out to the original street and continue along at whatever pace you were running before.

Notice what you are doing here, as it is a definite pattern. "Hard, easy, hard, easy". Put another way, you could say "work, rest, work, rest". It's very much the same sort of philosophy used by weight lifters, who might do bicep curls today, but won't do any bicep work the next day. They always take off the 24 hours following those workouts. Reason? To avoid injury through overworking the muscles.

If you are indoors on a treadmill, there is another way to do the same as above. If you have a "good" treadmill, one where you can incline the ramp, that would be a good way to simulate hills. Anything that makes you work harder is good for a workout, and will serve to maximize your overall benefit.

You mentioned "huffing and puffing", and that's something to take note of. There is nothing "wrong" with huffing and puffing...at the right time. However, there is a reason why you are doing that, and that's to get more oxygen to the rest of the body. You see, when you work harder, that taxes the muscles, which in turn requires more oxygen. A good rule of thumb is the harder you work (as in running versus walking) the more oxygen you will need. The human body will demand it, and "huffing and puffing" is one way to get it.
I'm sure you've heard of "aerobics". Simply put, "aerobic" means "in the presence of oxygen". It's actually one of the most easily understood terms I could throw at you. But the point for you to know is that you will improve over time, Your lungs will develop more and more as you continue to work them! Think of them as muscles. When you work various muscles, they become larger and stronger. Your heart and lungs need to be worked in order to "build" them, too.

Not too many years ago, I worked out at a fitness center near here. A lot of the men went there just to "pump iron", and I seldom saw them go on a treadmill. These guys were all much younger than me, and yet, when I saw them at a road race, all of them finished behind me! Why? Well, it wasn't because i'm fast, because I'm not fast! Simply because that buff look may be great on the beach, but it didn't do anything for them otherwise. They all got winded several times during the race, and had to stop more than once!

In any case, the important thing is to have fun. Running is the best way I know of to build a strong heart, so keep up the good work, even if it's only in little bits and pieces.
