i'm reasonably fit and healthy but i want to try and learn to skip on the spot, what is the technique?
It is a matter of practice, but you will get it soon.
Try to jump as little as necesary, just enough to let the rope through. At first we tend to jump to high, slowly decress the distance you raise your feet from the ground. (both legs together at first).
The key point is coordination between the moment you jump and the speed the rope is moving at.
Try to jump as the rope is above your head so that by the time you get down, the rope has pass your feet. As you will see the rope needs some speed to travel the distance that separate it from your feet. That is why the rope has to move fast. It is a fast pace, so you will get winded soon.
If you want a slower pace, then jump when the rope is about eye level so the distance it has to travel is shorter to get pass your raised feet.
Jump with your knees bend and try to bend them softly when you land. Do not keep them rigid. Land and jump with the ball of your feet, not with your whole feet. (You have to jump and land with the "point" of your feet, not the sole.)
Also, get a good rope, the ones made of leather are best, a litle expensive, but well worth the money is you are going to jump rope and do it wright.
Soon you get the coordination and know your speed and when to jump. It will become automatic. Then, start jumping with one leg for a couple of times, then the other, and so on. Soon you will exchange them every turn. After that the rest of the tricks are just a matter of a little practice.
Rope jumping is a great cardio exercise!
