Why Mixed Martial Arts Fighters Are Doing Sport And Not An Art
I know that whenever I write one of these articles on Mixed Martial Arts I am going to get hate mail, but the truth is the truth, and one can only hope to rescue the misbegotten. That bit of humor aside, I actually love MMA, especially the UFC grudge matches. There is just enough Roman in me to enjoy the circus.
Now, the main reason such venues as Strike Force and the venerable Ultimate Fighting Championships aren't art is lack of control. When Joe Beatemup is mounting Billy Mouthpiece and the announcer is talking about control, take it with a grain of salt. The contest, you see is real, and the control is tenuous at best.
Real control means that you are controlling the other fighter so well they don't even know what you are doing. There is no contest for control (a superior position), but rather an actual artistic application wherein Mr. Victim feels like he is in a whirlwind, and Mr. Incharge is definitely and surely taking the other fellow for a ride. True control is control without any shade of doubt, or even any contest.
This is like the difference between a fellow painting a house and a Van Gogh. Yes, the house painter is using the same materials, and he may even get a calm and peaceful and artistic feeling about what he is doing. But he is not controlling the tools of his trade in any manner comparable to a Van Gogh.
Now, let's not disparage the MMA fighters. To say there is no art in the execution of their fight is silly. But, and this is a big but, it does lead to the big and most important difference between the Mixed Martial Arts Masters and those who pursue the True Art. The difference is that the true art does not allow contest.
In the true art an opponent is considered on the par of a training aid. The contest is not to beat up one's fellow man, you see, it is to stifle the desire to fight (and therefore have enemies). And that brings to mind the old saying, 'To know yourself is to know your enemy.'
If you are busy beating people up...you are not seeking peace within yourself. And, one can hope that, eventually, the young turks of the gladiatorial ring will one day renounce their savagery and pursue the true art. They will seek to understand their desire to contest with others, and realize that the truth is within themselves.
Then all of their mighty abilities will be turned to beneficial ends. Then their sport will make the transformation into true art, and the circus will become an event of importance. The real joy for this writer, to be honest, is when one of the Mixed Martial Arts fighters has an artistic moment, and the true art does shine forth.

can anyone recommend a good book about body weight training?
i've been looking for a good book(and/or dvd) on body weight training, using little or no equipment. is there anything out there that's written well and explains the exercises thoroughly and offers a few routines that isn't full of marketing hype(matt furey) and overpriced? any good recommendations would be appreciated. thanks.
I can not answer you a particular book and it would not be fair if i tried to search one for you because my energies are not there. All i can say is to focus your energies for the law of attraction to find the direction you need for what you want to accomplish with your weight training. The universe will guide you to where you need to go and will find the resources (Books, DVDs, youtube pages) that you need along the way.
My first suggestion is a different category, as one in body building would sound right. I hope this helps
