Shoulder Therapy Exercises Improved my Golf Playing

I had to give up golf last year after damaging my shoulder.  I had hoped that it was going to be a short vacation from the fairways but as my shoulder deteriorated I soon realised that I would be away from all but the nineteenth hole for quite a while.
My shoulder injury turned out to be a torn rotator cuff, which led to a shoulder impingement so after trying the usual treatments of steroid injections and physical therapy I was booked for surgery.
The operation went well.  I had an appointment with my surgeon after the operation where he explained that because of the severity of the tear in my rotator cuff and my age I might well be looking at twelve to eighteen months of recuperation.  As I was already missing my twice-weekly golf game this did not appeal at all.
Post op, I had to have a couple of weeks off and give my shoulder complete rest and I took the opportunity to do a bit of research on the subject and discovered that shoulder therapy exercises feature strongly in all shoulder rehabilitation whether it is after an operation or instead of one.  It appears that most rotator cuff problems can be sorted out with anti-inflammatory drugs and physical therapy.  I had been in a small minority in needing surgery.
In my case the key was to rest my shoulder properly to allow the surgery site to heal completely and then to start some shoulder therapy exercises aimed at strengthening not just the injured rotator cuff but the whole shoulder.
It takes around twenty two muscles to move yoru shoulder so the programme was a mixture of exercises designed to isolate and exercise specific muscles as well as exercises that looked at muscle groups.  It appears that a rotator cuff tear does not have to heal completely in order to become pain free.  By exercising and waking up all the shoulder muscles you support the damaged rotator cuff, taking the load off it and allowing it to heal.
I managed to get myself back playing golf in just four months.  More than anything else I believe that this was down to building up the level of exercise slowly and steering clear of anything that caused pain.  Pain equals damage with shoulders so there is no point in rushing the exercises.  I would have been happy with nine months after talking to the surgeon.
But what is best is one of the side effects of the shoulder therapy exercises.  Stronger shoulders meant stronger hitting on the golf course.  I am now consistently driving every fairway shot about ten percent further which makes me feel a whole lot better about the whole experience.
So wake up your shoulders and improve your game.
