Basic knowledge of ECG
ECG or Electrocardiogram refers to the representation of the electrical activity of human heart captured over a period of time through skin electrodes which are used externally. The activity of the heart is represented over a strip of paper in the form of waves. An ECG machine is required for getting the ECG of a person. When the results offered by the ecg are interpreted and analyzed by the heart specialists then they become able to diagnose a large number of diseases and conditions related to the heart.
Over a number of years, ecg has made a lot of advancement. You might have heard some people referring ecg as 12 lead ecg. The reason behind this is that this process records the heart's activity from twelve points of view. It is crucial to take 12 points of view because one cannot expect to get the information about the complete activity of the heart through 2 or 3 point of view only. An ecg machine is an important device which can be seen in almost all the hospitals and nursing homes.
Normal people cannot understand and read the electrocardiogram. One needs to have information about the anatomy of the heart which is the structure. Also, one needs to have information on how the human heart functions i.e. physiology of the human heart. One may wonder that why actually ECG is so important and why it is done. The answer to this lies in the fact that without ECG report, it cannot be understood that whether certain health problem in really caused by any problem in the functioning of the heart or not.
In those cases, where doctors assume that the suffering of the patient is related to some kind of heart problem, ECG is done. There are a number of symptoms which makes it necessary to do an ecg. Conditions like weakness, shortness of breath, pain in the chest or discomfort, getting fainted, experiencing anxiety etc. are some of the conditions in which the patient is advised to get an ecg on an urgent basis. Sometimes, ecg reports tell that the patient is suffering from a certain health problem not really because of heart problem but because of other reasons like overdose of certain drugs like cocaine, antidepressants etc. We can say that ecg is a very important procedure in medical science.
