Top Things that you can do in Macau
Macau near Hong Kong is one of the best places to be, especially if you are looking for a relaxing holiday staying at a grand hotel. There are plenty of sightseeing options in Macau but the main highlight of Macau is the varied casinos with their card playing table and slot machines. Almost all big hotels have their own casinos and the Chinese people throng these casinos and gamble their hearts away. The Chinese people are fond of gambling and many of them come to Macau from Shangai and Beijing to gamble. Macau can be reached by ferry and it is exactly an hours boat ride from Hong Kong ferry port.
Plans are on to build a super road highway from Hong to Macau which will reduce the time to just 15 minutes and people will be able to take their own cars to Macau. Coming back to the casinos, there about 45 of them in Macau and 25 of them are in a 2 km radius. The best places to experience the grandeur of the casino are the Venetian, MGM, Wynn and Grand Lisboa. The Grand Lisboa hotel is my favorite as it is 4 levels of casinos and the hotel is shaped in the form of a flower. The whole area is lighted up at night and it looks really pretty. There is a beautiful water fountain that comes to life every 20 minutes in front of the Wynn hotel. This fountain sways according to the music played in the background and it is a treat to watch. Do not miss the golden tee show in the main hall of the Wynn hotel. Entrance is free here.
Besides the casinos, the other major sightseeing attraction of the Macau is the Macau Tower which is one of the tallest towers in the world. You can see the whole of Macau from the top level and if you have a string heart then you can also do bungee jumping from the tower. The sight is scary but it is the price of 5,000 Hong Kong dollars that is scarier. A holy place in Macau where every local loves to go is the A Ma temple. Here people come to pray to their Ma goddess to make them earn money through their hard work and also gambling. Another point of interest is Saint Pauls Cathedral. This is a church that was built in 1602 and it had the first Jesuit college. However in 1835, a major fire destroyed the church and the school leaving behind the staircase and the stone façade.
Another not to be missed attraction is Mount Fortress that is built on a hilltop. You can climb up the passageway to the fort or you can take the cable car. The canons of the fortress wered used when the Dutch invaded Macau. Here you can also have a dekho at the Macau Museum which has 3 levels.
